Morrison staff and students probably didn’t expect to return from Christmas break to buckled hardwood floors in the gym.

The damage is isolated to one end. However, it has interfered with home basketball games, which have been moved to other locations.

As for the cause, Director of Schools Bobby Cox says the water either came from a leaky air conditioning unit or heavy rain that came in around the unit. Morrison School opened in August 2012.

“Our deductible is $25,000 and it will be north of that to repair it,” said Cox to School Board members on Tuesday during a board workshop.

Asked School Board member Sue Anderson, “What are we doing to keep this from happening again?”

Answered Cox, “We’ve worked on that unit a couple of times. There was a coil issue where a drip pan was not redirecting the water. I’ve already contacted the insurance company.”

On Wednesday, Praters Flooring, a company contracted out of Chattanooga, reported that the damage is contained to the top level of flooring.

“We will only have to replace the damaged part so they will resand, reseal and stripe the floor to match,” said Cox. “”We should receive an estimate on the repair cost tomorrow.”

The completion of repairs and replacement of damaged flooring on the gym floor is estimated to take around a week.
