Bad news was delivered to Morrison postal customers this week when a sign announcing the location will no longer be operational was posted on the door. Despite the announcement, the fate of the Morrison Post Office is still up in the air.

The sign on the door reads, “Effective May 27, 2022, the Morrison Post Office, located at 140 E. Maple St. will no longer be operational. The new station for retail services will be located at the Smartt-Post Office, 5174 Manchester Hwy. We will be open for business at the new building immediately.”

Morrison residents are not thrilled about the possible closure. Robert Hoover of Bob’s Barber Shop is right next to the post office and said it would be inconvenient for him to go to a different location.

“I hate that terribly. I have a P.O. Box over there and I go get my mail. I just hate they’re going,” said Hoover.

Morrison Hardware and Industrial Supply manager Jason Heath works across the street from the post office and said it would impact him if it does close, but he said he heard they might get to keep the building.

“It would most definitely affect me,” said Heath. “Right now I can walk right across the street and get my mail, otherwise they are thinking I will be going to Manchester to get my mail. It is a toss-up between Smartt and Manchester as far as where we would go, but I have recently been told that is about to be worked out.”

The media representative for the post office was unable to be reached for comment. Morrison Mayor Sue Anderson says she is working to keep it open and they do not know anything for sure yet.

“I have been working on it for a couple of weeks trying to get something resolved, but we are just in the hold stage right now. We are hoping we are going to be able to save it, but we don’t know yet,” said Anderson.

The sign posted at the Morrison Post Office also included some important details regarding the move. The sign says, “Your deliver service will not be impacted. P.O. Box service and ‘Left Notice’ items will be available for pick up at the Morrison Post Office through Friday, May 27, 2022. Effective Monday, May 30, 2022, P.O. Box and ‘Left Notice’ items for P.O. Boxes and Street Delivery will be available for pick-up at the Smartt Post Office. P.O. Box customers will be issued new keys for temporary boxes at the new location and continue their P.O. Box access. P.O. Box numbers and addresses will stay the same.”

As of now, Morrison Post Office will no longer be operational effective May 27.
