Two local students have placed in a statewide civics essay contest sponsored by the Tennessee Secretary of State. The students, eighth-grader Lauren Mansfield of Centertown School, took third in the state in the 6-8 grade category, while Elsa Smith of Covenant Academy received honorable mention in the 3-5 grade category. Students were asked to write about citizenship with length requirements varying by grade level.
