Saturday Sundown Sidewalk Sales could return to Main Street McMinnville in 2021.

Hosted by Main Street McMinnville in conjunction with downtown shop owners, Saturday Sundown Sidewalk Sales offer an additional chance for downtown businesses to attract shoppers on the second Saturday of each month from 5 to 8 p.m.

Those events, which included live music, began in August of 2020. However, it was spearheaded by former executive director Teresa Prober. The organization has yet to hire a replacement, so board members must step up or opt to postpone the event.

Main Street McMinnville board member Katie Kemezis questioned the feasibility of those kicking off in May or July and continuing through September or October.

“I was wondering if anyone would drive the effort of organizing second Saturdays. If not, maybe there is someone you know who might be a good volunteer for that,” said Kemezis, who outlined the responsibilities. “She (Prober) arranged for all the businesses to be open on the second Saturday of the month. It’s about talking to the businesses and getting them involved, figuring out a time and getting promotions out. She even took it a step further and organized music. That may be a bridge too far.”

Joe O’Neal offered to begin contacting musicians and speaking with downtown business owners, and Raven Young added, “You could take one side of the street and I’ll take the other. Maybe some of us can do this together.”

The majority of shops are closed by 3 p.m. on Saturdays.

Young said she’s received inquiries from downtown business owners on when the Saturday evening event will return in 2021 due to its success in attracting shoppers.

Kemezis replied, “It’s good that they’re seeing the value of it and are asking for its return. It’s just a matter of coordinating the events and getting businesses to agree to stay open from 5 to 8 p.m. once a month.”

More information will be available as plans are generated.
