Local churches collecting donations for hurricane relief

Representatives with the Central Baptist Association shown with supplies donated to Hurricane Harvey victims are, from left, Jim Ramsey, Jeff Owens and Jon Ballard. Donations are being accepted until Sept. 29.

Disaster relief efforts in Texas are projected to take more than a year in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.
Local church officials say there’s still plenty of time to donate before they transport their first batch of supplies to the Houston area on Sept. 29. The drop-off point for this collection is Pioneer Community Church on Yager Road from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday.
“We received a lot of donations last week, but really not much this week,” said Pioneer Community Church paster Jon Ballard. “I think people believe it’s too late when it’s not. This collection doesn’t end until Sept. 29.”
Since cleanup is estimated to take such a long time, not all supplies are being rushed to the area.
“Right now they have called in the chainsaw crews in Texas,” said Jim Ramsey who works with the Central Baptist Association and Southern Baptist Association. “It will be a year-long project at least.”
As for donation guidelines, organizers say do not give bottled water as there are plenty of disaster relief organizations with an ample amount of bottled water to provide. Also, do not give used clothing. New underwear and socks can be donated in its original packaging.
As for what is useful, any type of toiletry items are needed such as soap and toothpaste. Tools such as hammers and shovels can also be donated.
The Central Baptist Association is accepting donations for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts at Pioneer Community Church at 1707 Yager Road. Collection hours are 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. until Sept. 29.

Bottled water is NOT needed.
