Local Authors Day a hit

Tara Cowan was one of the 18 local authors to showcase her work at the Magness Library’s Local Authors Day. She has been writing novels since she was 17 and is the author of the “Torn Asunder" series, including “Southern Rain,” “Northern Fire” and “Charleston Tides.” Her latest book is titled “Thank God for Mississippi.”

Local Authors Day was a big success with a total of 18 authors showcasing their work.

The Magness Library hosted the event earlier this month and Magness Library Assistant director Merissa Chapman said there was a great turnout.

“It went amazing,” said Chapman. “We had 18 authors total and approximately 60 people came through. The director, Brad Walker, and I were pleasantly surprised about the amount of people that came out for our first authors event in five years.”

This event allowed people to meet the people behind the books and learn a little about the process of writing. Chapman said the authors were also able to interact and learn from each other.

“The authors were all so supportive of each other and went to each table to talk to them about their books. Some even bought books from them,” said Chapman. “I personally bought two books. I also learned so much about how certain publishers work, which I believe is so helpful. I get to see the finished product on a daily basis but not the process of how it’s actually published and what the authors do to get there.”

This event may also lead to a local author support group where local writers can gather, help and encourage each other. They are still working out the details on this group.

“With this event, the library has been asked if we’d host a group of authors who want to meet up here to support and motivate each other, anyone who writes would be welcome to come. I’ve said yes, of course. We’d love to be the place they gather,” said Chapman.

Overall, the first Local Authors Day in five years was a big hit. The library staff is looking forward to the next one.

“I’m so excited for next year’s event. It’s definitely happening as of now,” said Chapman.
