Three local agencies have been recognized by the state for their dedication to protecting children by offering locations where caregivers can go to have their child’s car seat inspected.

McMinnville Police Department, McMinnville Fire Department and Warren County Sheriff’s Department were recognized for their 2018-19 efforts in child seat safety and were given the Fitting Station of the Year Award by the Tennessee Highway Safety Office.

“Vehicle passenger safety is a priority with each of our agencies,” said McMinnville Police Chief Bryan Denton. “We are excited about this statewide recognition for the team and will continue our efforts in local highway safety.”

Fitting Station of the Year Award is given to an agency or organization that, as a leader and advocate, has actively supported child passenger safety, demonstrated by a number of technician hours, the number of individual events at which service has been provided to the community, and a showing of passion for service to the public.

A child passenger seat fitting station is an approved checkpoint location, registered with Safekids and Tennessee Highway Safety Office. In order to be a fitting station the location must have current Child Passenger Seat Technicians, car seats available for distribution, child passenger seat laws brochures, and an area to safely inspect vehicles with child passenger seats.

THSO made the presentation during the 2019 Tennessee Lifesavers Conference in Murfreesboro.

Denton says THSO liked the local team approach and the fact three of the four certified fitting stations provided an indoor, climate-controlled area for inspecting car seats in vehicles which have been proven necessary when someone comes to have a car seat inspected and it was raining, snowing, extremely hot, or extremely cold.

The local team utilizes a variety of media outlets, including the Southern Standard, to notify the public about new laws, recommendations, and inspection sites for upcoming events.

Child Passenger Seat technicians are available every day at each of the departments. Caregivers who wish to schedule an inspection of their child’s car seat may call McMinnville Police Department at 473-3808, McMinnville Fire Department at 473-3435, or Warren County Sheriff’s Department at 473-7863.
