A man with an extensive criminal history was indicted Friday for raping a 14-year-old girl.
Gary Lee Lankford, 47, was indicted by the Warren County grand jury for one count of rape for an incident which reportedly happened Oct. 19, 2020.
“This was a horrible act that will change her life forever,” said District Attorney General Lisa Zavogiannis. “The girl is just a child. He missed the charge of rape of a child by just one year.”
Zavogiannis said law enforcement officials became involved on Oct. 19 when they were called to Saint Thomas River Park Hospital to investigate the girl’s claim of rape. She reported the incident shortly after it happened.
Zavogiannis said Lankford is charged with one single incident.
Lankford threatened to commit suicide by taking pills when officers tried to take him into custody in a vehicle on Twin Oaks Road. He eventually surrendered after negotiations. Warren County EMS was called on standby in case Lankford made good on his threat.
Zavogiannis said Lankford has an extensive criminal history, indicating he served time for murder in Michigan. He was also involved in covering up the infamous hog farm murder here in Warren County by helping to dispose of the body of Daniel Mayo after he was shot and killed by Timmie Bain in the Rock Island area.
Lankford was given a year in jail for his role in that crime.
