A man has been exonerated on felony assault charges after his gun went off, narrowly missing the man he was fighting.Jurors found the defendant, Paul D. Knight, 32, not guilty on charges of aggravated assault and assault after a one-day trial this week. He could have faced three to six years in prison if convicted, but instead he walked from the courtroom a free man after jurors found him not guilty across the board.Knight was charged after an incident at a home on Moffitt Drive in Rock Island in February. Lawmen said he and Jason Crouch had a confrontation when Knight went to the home of his estranged wife and found Crouch there.“A fight ensued,” deputy Brystol Davis reported, noting Crouch suffered injuries in the struggle.
