The Rotary Club of McMinnville remembered the Holocaust in its weekly luncheon program on May 4. The special event in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church recalled the Allies’ defeat of the Nazi Third Reich and Germany’s formal surrender on May 8, 1945, ending World War II. In the latter parts of April, and the beginnings of May in 1945, Hitler’s Third Reich defenses crumbled. Many fled from the Allies, while others surrendered, and on May 8, VE Day, General Alfred Jödl signed the instruments of unconditional surrender. Many lives were lost during the Holocaust era, however, despite the tragedy of lost lives, some survived.
