Morrison Ruritan has named Joe Hefner as its 2022 Citizen of the Year. He will be honored during a banquet on April 9.

“It’s a nice recognition,” said Hefner. “I really appreciate it.”

Hefner is a life-long Morrison resident. He has been an alderman for the town for approximately 30 years and currently serves as vice mayor.

“It is pretty rewarding at times, but sometimes you have to bite your tongue,” said Hefner of being a public servant for three decades. “Someone needs to do it. We’ve always had a good bunch. We pretty much agree on what’s good for the community, and we work together to do what’s best.”

Hefner is a former member of Morrison Volunteer Fire Department. He was a firefighter for approximately 20 years. He retired from Carrier in 2005 and is an active member of Morrison United Methodist Church.

Hefner is the son of the late Houston and Nettie Lou Hefner. He has two brothers, Charles and John. He is married to Sarajane. They have one daughter and one granddaughter.

Serving the public is a tradition for the Hefner family. Charles was named Morrison Ruritan Citizen of the Year in 2014. Their mother also received Morrison Ruritan Citizen of the Year. However, the date of that recognition is unknown.

Also during the banquet a Ruritan of the Year will be announced. The individual will be selected by a secret ballot of club members and will be presented the Arry Youngblood Memorial Award.

Individuals wanting to attend the April 9 banquet have until April 6 to RSVP by calling Mike Holland at 939-2540. Meal cost is $10 per person.
