A head-on collision occurred on Shelbyville Road Tuesday morning and sent both drivers to the hospital.

According to Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper Rodney Whiles, around 9 a.m. Michael Ofield, 73, was traveling east on Shelbyville Road in a 2016 Nissan Titan and Dennis Jernigan, 58, was traveling west on Shelbyville Road in a 2023 Toyota Tacoma. Jernigan had reportedly just finished negotiating the curb when he struck Ofield head on causing the crash.

“Jernigan was in the wrong lane. It doesn’t appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor. I don’t know if it was possibly a medical condition or distracted driving,” said Whiles.

Whiles said the rainy weather was not a factor in the collision. Jernigan was reportedly driving on the wrong side of the road before the wreck.

“There was a witness that apparently lives close by that was pulling out of their driveway and when he (Jernigan) passed them he was driving on the wrong side of the road,” said Whiles.

Ofield reportedly broke his collarbone and was transported to Ascension Saint Thomas River Park to be treated for his injuries. Jernigan was also transported to the hospital to be treated for injuries. According to Whiles, Jernigan’s airbags deployed, but he was not wearing a seatbelt and hit his head.
