Household hazardous waste will be collected this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Three Star Mall. Pictured are products dropped off at last year’s event.

It’s time to get rid of old drain cleaner, pool chemicals and antifreeze.

Tennessee residents who have accumulated unwanted hazardous materials around their homes can take advantage of a free Household Hazardous Waste Collection to be held this Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Three Star Mall.

Household hazardous waste is defined as corrosive, flammable, toxic or reactive materials used in or around your home or garage that are no longer wanted or have become unusable. These types of materials should be properly disposed of -- not included with regular garbage.

A household hazardous waste mobile collection site will be set up in the mall parking lot.

Some of the household items that will be accepted include cleaning fluids, disinfectants, drain openers, oven cleaners, paint thinner, paint strippers, adhesives, unused medication, needles and sharps in puncture-proof containers, mercury thermostats and thermometers, driveway sealants, roofing tar, wallpaper remover, photo processing chemicals, aerosols and compressed gas, fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent bulbs.

Lawn and garden chemicals will be accepted, including pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, and wood preservatives.

Automotive products can include fuel and oil additives, grease and rust solvents, naval jelly, carburetor and fuel injector cleaners, starter fluids, body putty, antifreeze/ coolants and gasoline.

Items that WILL NOT be accepted at the household hazardous waste collection event include: medical or infectious waste, alkaline batteries, explosives, paint, electronics, ammunition, fireworks, military ordinance, gun powder, radioactive waste, including smoke detectors and radium paint, and any empty containers.

It should be noted the Fairground Convenience Center will be open the day of the event from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. so any materials not acceptable at the mall can be dropped off there. Items that can be disposed of at the Fairground Convenience Center year round include paint, batteries, oil, oil filters and electronics.

Conditionally Exempt Small Generator Waste from non-household sources such as businesses, schools, nurseries, farms and churches may be accepted for a fee by appointment only. Call (615) 643-3170 to request a price quote and schedule an appointment.
