Fourth of July celebrations are a fun time for most, but not always for our four legged friends.
More dogs go missing on this holiday than any other day due to loud fireworks. Warren County Animal Control and Adoption Center is teaming up with Fi Nano to offer free-for-life microchip registrations and updates to better help owners keep track of their pets.
Microchips are a great recovery tool for pet owners, but sometimes due to yearly fees or confusing instructions, a lot of these microchips go unregistered. An unregistered microchip is similar to having an un-engraved ID tag on your pet’s collar.
Fi Nano is offering the free microchip registrations through a form located on Animal Control’s Facebook page. Owners can register their microchips even if it is already registered elsewhere.
Fireworks are always a yearly struggle for some dogs. Pet MD recommends a few ways to help reduce dog fireworks anxiety. They suggest giving the dog a pre-fireworks workout by either going on a long walk or playing for an extended amount of time. An exhausted dog might be less likely to react to fireworks.
Another suggestion is to schedule meals and bathroom breaks early so they will not have to be outside when fireworks begin. Pet MD also suggests keeping the dog occupied during fireworks with a treat or busy toy. Providing comfort to your dog is also a way to help relieve their anxiety. Sitting closely to the dog and petting them could help reduce their fear of loud booms.
