Questions still remain regarding the events that led up to the fatal shooting on Friday night, and the investigation is ongoing.

Jacob Omar Simpson, 37, was charged with criminal homicide. According to the warrant signed by lead detective Sgt. Stuart Whitman, “On Jan. 20, 2023, at approximately 11:20 p.m., in the front yard of the residence at 109 Lance Street, Jacob Omar Simpson did unlawfully shoot Jathan Allen Cagle with a firearm which led to the death of Mr. Cagle.”

The 20-year-old was airlifted to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga before succumbing to his injuries. Detective Sgt. Whitman said that the McMinnville Police Department and District Attorney General for the 31st Judicial District Chris Stanford are still investigating the case.

In a press release from Stanford, he says that due to the ongoing nature of the investigation and the need to preserve certain evidence for the courtroom pursuant to legal process, more information will not be released at this time.

Sgt. Whitman said, “Even though we have made an arrest, we still have more work to do.” Simpson is currently being held at the Warren County Jail with a bond of $1 million and was indicted on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
