Two drivers suspected of alcohol use were involved in a head-on crash Friday night on Lucky Road with one driver airlifted and in serious condition.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol says Alfonso Cortes, 46, is the seriously injured driver. He was airlifted from Lucky to Erlanger Medical Center.

The Highway Patrol says Cortes is responsible for causing the head-on crash as he was driving southbound on Lucky Road, heading toward McMinnville. His black Isuzu Rodeo reportedly crossed the center line in the area of Bald Knob Road and collided with another vehicle.

Cortes was lying outside his vehicle on the pavement when emergency responders arrived. He had a smell of alcohol about him, according to the Highway Patrol, and a blood sample was taken.

The vehicle Cortes hit was a Chevy Tahoe registered to Eusebio Olvera. It was traveling north on Lucky Road heading outbound. A witness reportedly saw the driver run from the scene and a driver has not been located.

What was located was a number of Corona and Bud Lite cans inside the Tahoe. That driver is also suspected of drinking.

“The Tahoe driver tried to get out of the way and had swerved over to the shoulder,” said state trooper Ben Cannon. “The driver of the Isuzu completely crossed over the yellow line and was in the other lane of traffic.”

The crash occurred Friday night around 11:20 p.m.
