Two drivers were seriously injured and a dog was killed in a head-on collision on Smithville Highway on Monday.

Smithville resident Donna Cope, 57, was airlifted, while McMinnville resident Bobby Smith, 52, was rushed from the scene by Warren County EMS to Saint Thomas River Park Hospital. The two collided at approximately 4 p.m. at the intersection of Smithville Highway and Lowery Lane.

According to Tennessee Highway Patrol officer Wade Myers, the accident occurred after an attempt by Cope to prevent a rear-end collision with a third vehicle.

“Cope was traveling north on Highway 56,” said Myers, indicating she was heading toward Smithville. “She was following too close to the vehicle in front of her. The vehicle in front of her was attempting to make a right turn onto Lowery Lane. She slammed on her brakes and veered into the southbound lane. She collided with a vehicle driven by Bobby Smith.”

The impact caused Smith’s 2007 Chevy Silverado to leave the roadway, spin and roll. He was removed through the passenger-side door. Cope’s 2005 Nissan Sentra spun back into the outbound lane. Trapped in the wreckage, rescue personnel used the Jaws of Life to extricate her from the driver’s side.

Myers expressed his belief that both drivers will survive. However, the same could not be said for a Chihuahua.

“I hope they’ll be fine,” said Myers, when asked his opinion on the medical status of both drivers. “I think they will be. Cope had a dog riding in her lap. It did not survive.”

Charges are pending further investigation.
