Six new County Commissioners were sworn in Thursday night along with the incumbent Commissioners as they begin their four year terms.

Before the special called County Commission meeting, the commissioners took the oath of office and swore to uphold the constitution. This year there are six new comers to the county commission. They are: Donna Smith, Cam Montgomery, Scott Kelly, James Hines, Kenny Moffitt, and Chris Rippy.

The commission currently only has 23 commissioners due to the District 2 vacancy caused by the declination of office by Scottie Keel. During the special called meeting, the commission voted to accept the declination.

The District 2 position will be on the Nov. 8 ballot. The 2nd District race had six candidates running in August. Keel and Montgomery were both elected. Also in the field were Sommer Walker, Dana Mullican, Robert Hennessee and Dwight Bouldin. It is currently unknown who will run or rerun for the position.

The qualifying deadline is Sept. 14 at noon. Anyone interested in running for the vacant seat were able to begin picking up papers on Sept. 2. The requirement of getting 25 signatures from registered voters in that district still remains.
