City taking steps for new sidewalk
A sidewalk is being constructed on N. Chancery Street from the bypass to where motorists enter Walmart. McMinnville Public Works began working on the project last week.

While motorists idle as they wait for widening of N. Chancery Street, pedestrians could be walking on a sidewalk in the near future.
“A sidewalk is on its way,” said city administrator Bill Brock. “We placed one from Bybee Branch Road to the bypass last year. Right now, we’re placing a sidewalk beside Walmart. We are going to try to carry that sidewalk all the way down and tie it into the intersection where The Village is located, the intersection of Smithville, Chancery, and Hobson streets.”
City officials attempted to widen N. Chancery Street approximately five years ago. The project would have included a turning lane and a sidewalk. However, property owners on the street halted the project.
Also under consideration is finding a way to help pedestrians traverse the busy intersection at the bypass.
“We are still trying to figure out a way to get them across the bypass safely, but we haven’t solved that problem yet,” said Brock. “We’re going to talk to the state and see if there is anything they can do or anything they can help us with. "
