Beat boredom, make art
Art Contest - actual entry - Leah Dasaro, 10.jpg
Leah Dasaro, 10, had the first entry in the Southern Standard’s art contest. Local students are encouraged to submit entries online and our favorites will be published in the newspaper.

School is out and children are being encouraged to stay home due to COVID-19 concerns.

During these times of isolation, boredom can seem like a constant companion, never leaving our side like a faithful puppy.

The Southern Standard wants to help. The newspaper is holding an art contest for children of all ages. The contest is ongoing and will continue for as long as schools are closed.

Top entries will be published in the newspaper to showcase the artistic talents of our children.

“We view this as a way to encourage students to be creative while they are confined at home,” said Standard publisher Patricia Zechman. “We’re hoping for widespread participation. If we’re flooded with entries, we could publish a winner in every edition of the newspaper. If entries are more spaced out, we might publish a winner once a week.”

To enter, simply post your entry to the Standard’s Facebook page or the Standard’s website, There is a link on the homepage that says “Art Contest.”
