A man was sentenced for reportedly throwing a food tray at a correctional officer and damaging equipment at the Warren County Jail.
Tyler Mitchell Barnes appeared in Circuit Court and was sentenced to four years and ordered to pay $50 plus court costs for the amended charge of attempted aggravated assault. On April 2, 2023, Barnes was an inmate at the Warren County Jail. According to the warrant on this date Barnes was observed being out of proper dress code by a correctional officer. He was advised to put his pants on. After being given that order, Barnes reportedly said, “F*** no” and grabbed a tray from the food cart. The correctional officer reportedly attempted to grab the tray and at that time Barnes threw the tray at him. Barnes was then walked back to his cell following the incident. He was originally charged with aggravated assault on an officer and it was later amended to attempted aggravated assault.
Four days later, Barnes received additional charges. According to the warrant, he was at a disciplinary board hearing and was advised that he was going to be removed from the prison bus for 60 days. When Barnes walked out of the room, he reportedly kicked the air purifier machine and damaged it. The damage reportedly cost $3,000 to $4,000.
He was then placed back in his cell after reportedly making statements about flooding the area. According to the warrant, a short time after making those statements, Barnes caused a code blue in the medical area by breaking the sprinkler head and flooding the area. This cost $580 to replace and repair. The warrant states that Barnes could have also caused two other inmates to have a seizure due to the fire alarm being activated when he allegedly broke the sprinkler head.
Barnes was charged with vandalism of property in an amount $2,500 or more, but less than $10,000. In Circuit Court, he was sentenced to one year to serve and ordered to pay a $50 fine, court costs and pay $875 in restitution.
