Barnes leads push to save auxiliary

Warren County’s VFW’s Auxiliary could cease to exist, if its members move to disband on June 10.

Phyllis Barnes, former state president of the Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary and member of VFW Post 5064, wants to quash an effort to shut down the auxiliary.

“All members received a letter last week regarding some members wanting to shut down the auxiliary,” said Barnes. “We have been an auxiliary since 1949 and a lot of hard work went into being a successful auxiliary. Our organization works closely with the VFW Veterans and Military Support Program to meet the needs of both aging veterans and those returning from current conflicts. We work to help the veterans and families when they need us. We’ve worked hard and we shouldn’t give up now.”

A special meeting is being held Thursday, June 10, at 6 p.m. at Moose Lodge in its back room.

“We need at least 10 members to vote no in regard to shutting down the auxiliary in order to keep it open,” said Barnes. “Ten, that’s all we need. If we are successful, we will be meeting monthly at Gondola at 6:30 p.m. starting July 15 until we can get a room at the Warren County Administrative Office building on Locust Street. The VFW and auxiliary will be meeting there and working together.”

Lack of members and participation in the organization are likely the reasons why some want to call it quits, says Barnes.

“We used to have more than 300 members. Currently, we have 92 lifetime members. We have people who are transferring to our auxiliary and we need new members too. Those eligible for membership are fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, widowers, widows, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, grandfathers, grandmothers, grandsons and granddaughters of persons who were or are eligible for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.”

For potential newcomers to VFW Auxiliary, Barnes can be reached at (931) 934-3219 or (931) 808-5970.

For current VFW Auxiliary members, Barnes urges them to attend June 10 at 6 p.m. at Moose Lodge, 2851 Smithville Highway, and let their voice be heard.
