A man who assaulted his elderly grandparents and spit blood on a police officer while resisting arrest has been sentenced to serve 90 days in jail.
Joshua Keith Barnes, 26, was issued the sentence Tuesday after entering guilty pleas to criminal trespassing, reckless endangerment, domestic assault, resisting arrest, and assault.
The incident which led to his arrest took place Feb. 27 when Barnes and his girlfriend, Cecilia Manuel, arrived at the Spring Street home of his grandparents. An argument began between Barnes and his grandparents over money with court documents listing Barnes as homeless and unemployed.
Barnes became irritated and began breaking items and glass inside the home, according to the warrant for his arrest. He then pushed his 80-year-old grandfather, causing an injury to his ribs.
Barnes then walked outside before attempting to re-enter the home. At that point, both his grandparents and his girlfriend tried to keep him out.
But Barnes forcibly entered the home, pushing his frail grandmother, 81, to the ground. The grandmother had recently broken her hip, had two prior heart attacks, and was transported to the hospital after the altercation with her grandson.
Barnes decided to leave the property and reportedly took his girlfriend with him against her will. Manuel stated in the arrest warrant she felt forced to get in his vehicle and believed she did not have a choice. A charge of false imprisonment against Barnes was dismissed as a result of his plea agreement.
After reportedly endangering the public by driving recklessly at a high rate of speed, Barnes was pulled over by police at a gas station on Old Smithville Road. While being placed into custody, Barnes resisted arrest and spit blood in the face of the police officer.
