An arrest is forthcoming in the shooting death of Warren County native Dakota Nunley, who was shot and killed in an apparent road rage incident in Alabama.
According to Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon, a male in his 50s is in custody for the murder. The male reportedly came to the sheriff’s office Thursday around lunch to be interviewed and he confessed to investigators.
“We had every intention of charging him no matter what he said today,” said Moon during a Thursday afternoon press conference. “He changed his story a couple times, but once he saw the evidence we had in front of him he confessed.”
As of press time, arrest warrants were being obtained to formally charge him with the shooting. The suspect had not yet been identified
According to earlier reports, Nunley, 22, lost his life in a Wednesday, Dec. 2 altercation which took place between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m.
A large, white male with a gray goatee was reportedly in a 2000 Toyota 4-Runner that was involved in an incident with two white Dodge pickups between the city of Palmerdale and Remlap First Baptist Church, a 4.6-mile stretch along Highway 75.
Gunfire erupted and Nunley was shot.
“I think we’ve stopped every silver Toyota 4-Runner in Blount County about six times the last several weeks,” said Sheriff Moon.
He said tips from the public, including cellphone videos and car videos, helped determine the license plate involved and led to establishing a suspect. He said calls for public assistance from the media were a huge help.
Blount County is located in the northern portion of Alabama between Huntsville and Birmingham.
Nunley still has a number of friends and family members in this community and there was a huge turnout for his Dec. 10 service at High Funeral Home.
