Magness Library is celebrating 100 years this month. A scavenger hunt begins today, Nov. 15, and an anniversary ceremony begins Tuesday at 2 p.m.
In 1913, Mary Cunningham volunteered to manage a facility that would provide an area for ladies and their children to rest while waiting for men to complete their business. The facility would be called the Ladies Rest Rooms.
Cunningham placed six of her own books on the mantle. This would lead to the first free public library in Warren County.
To participate in the scavenger hunt, individuals must stop by the library and pick up a flyer that contains pictures of 13 architectural details that can be found either inside or outside the library.
Using the flyer, participants can search the library. As each item is found, write the room in which the item is located and what the item is below its picture.
Participants finding all the items can submit their flyer at the main desk for a chance to win a Kindle, which is the grand prize. There will also be second- and third-place winners of $25 and $10.
All entries must be received by Nov. 19 at 6 p.m., the day of the celebration. Winners will be announced at 7 p.m.
Activities for the celebration begin at 2 p.m. with an opening ceremony that will include proclamations of Public Library Day by County Executive John Pelham and McMinnville Mayor Jimmy Haley.
Other activities:
• 2:30 p.m. — Ben Lomond Garden Club dedications
• 3 p.m. — McMinnville Garden Club dedication
