Ann Hawkins remembers the tears she shed in late September when her son was released from Vanderbilt Medical Center and was preparing for months of rehabilitation at a hospital in Atlanta. The prognosis was grim, she had just been told, for 15-year-old Lake Hillis, who was critically injured during an organized four-wheeler race at the White County Fair. Lake suffered a brain injury when he was thrown from his four-wheeler and hit the ground head first. Despite wearing a helmet and all the necessary safety gear, the force of impact caused near-fatal injuries.“When we left Vanderbilt, the doctors told us Lake would never walk or talk again,” said Hawkins, obviously floored by such a devastating diagnosis.
