The swift waters of the rain-swollen Barren Fork River nearly claimed four victims Sunday afternoon as the kayakers had to be plucked from the raging river by rescuers. The rescue operations involved two separate incidents on different parts of the river. The first rescue came mid-afternoon Sunday when someone saw a boater in distress in the river near Beersheba Street. The Barren Fork below the dam at Pepper Branch Park was a raging torrent after several days of heavy rain had swollen the waterway almost to flood stage. As a result, the normally mild flow possessed a powerful current. It was that current rescuers believe swamped the kayaks of Abraham Torres and Megan Perry near Rocket Park.
