When Washington, D.C. resident Jamie Barnhard placed a bid on a 31-foot U.S. Navy captain’s launch in November, he had no idea of its connection to one of Warren County’s most respected heroes. It was only after he looked into its history he found the launch had been assigned to the USS David R. Ray.Warren County’s admiration and affection for native son David R. “Bobby” Ray is well known around here. The county has named both a school and a section of highway in his honor, and for good reason. Ray was awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor for sacrificing his life in a heroic effort to save fallen comrades during the Vietnam War.The U.S. Navy was also moved by Ray’s heroism, so much so that a Spruance-class destroyer was named in his honor.
