Tennessee’s 144 local education districts, serving 1 million students in public schools, turned to Warren County to find their premier model for volunteerism and community service. The Tennessee School Boards Association, at the conclusion of its 76th annual convention Monday, named McMinnville industrialist, civic activist and philanthropist Todd Herzog as its 2015 School Volunteer of the Year. “Years before Tennessee Promise, which guarantees two years of post-secondary education to qualifying high school graduates, Todd organized, fund-raised and promoted the state’s first successful model for this progressive ideal,” said Warren County Director of School Bobby Cox. “Todd’s idea for the Citizens for Progress scholarships has made it possible for more than 400 students from families of limited financial means to pursue their dreams in higher education.”In nominating Herzog, founder and recently retired president/CEO of Accu-Router Inc., the Warren County school administration cited his organizational skills and personal devotion in raising more than $500,000 since 2007 from private individuals, businesses and public events such as golf tournaments and concerts to send local students to two-year institutions, mainly Motlow State Community College and the Tennessee College of Applied Technology.
