Two McMinnville residents were among three people injured in a crash in Smithville on Saturday.
The local residents, Michael Q. McKinley, 22, and his 17-year-old passenger, whose name was not released, were both evacuated by helicopter for treatment of serious injuries. McKinley was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, while his teen passenger was flown to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. The driver of the other vehicle, Timmy Hendrixson, 43, of Smithville was taken to Cookeville Regional Medical Center by DeKalb County EMS.
The wreck happened Saturday on Highway 56 near Evins Mill Nursery. According to Highway Patrolman Bobby Johnson, McKinley was heading northbound, toward Smithville, in his 1997 Ford F150 when his truck ran off the right side of the roadway. Evidence suggests that after running off the shoulder, McKinley overcorrected and ran back onto the blacktop. He crossed the center line and slammed into an oncoming 1977 Ford pickup driven by Hendrixson, who was heading southbound toward McMinnville.
The impact came at an angle, ejecting Hendrixson from his pickup. McKinley was trapped inside the mangled wreckage of his vehicle and had to be extricated by the DeKalb County Fire Department Extrication Team.
It is not known what caused McKinley to lose control of his truck. An investigation is continuing.
