Two people were killed in a crash Friday morning on Manchester Highway near Warren County High School.
Killed were Rita Greene, 55, and Terry McCormick, 43. McCormick’s 2-year-old granddaughter, who was in a child restraint device in the back seat of her grandfather’s car, is under treatment at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.
According to highway patrol reports, the wreck happened just before 7 a.m. on Highway 55 (Manchester Highway) near the new Dollar General Store. Preliminary investigation revealed Greene was traveling east, toward McMinnville, in her 2005 Chrysler van when she suddenly veered across the five-lane highway and entered the westbound lanes. It was there her van slammed head-on into the oncoming 1999 Pontiac Grand Am driven by McCormick.
McCormick was dead on the scene of the wreck while Greene was extricated from the wreckage of her van and airlifted to Erlanger where she later succumbed to her injuries. The toddler was also airlifted by one of two helicopters which made landings in the middle of Highway 55.
Investigators say McCormick was on his way to pick up his wife from work while Greene was reportedly on her way home from work. While the exact cause of the wreck may never be known, investigators suspect fatigue could have contributed to Greene possibly nodding off behind the wheel given her sudden deviation from her course.
