This is no fish tale. Bill Holt Chevrolet has presented a check to the Warren County High School fishing club that was this big.
The check was $600 to be exact and it will go toward buying uniforms for fishing club members, according to club sponsor J.W. Holt. The fishing club is in its second year at WCHS.
“This has been a good thing for these guys,” said Holt. “It’s kind of like the archery team. It gives kids another outlet to get involved and be part of something at the high school.”
Club members are about to begin a five-tournament schedule that includes stops at Tim’s Ford, Center Hill, Chickamauga, and Nickajack.
The schedule will culminate with a fish-off in May.
Holt says competition is much like any fishing tournament with anglers trying to catch bass, often with a five-fish limit. He said some tournaments offer a $500 scholarship to the winner.
There are also colleges, such as Bryan College in Dayton, which have fishing teams and offer scholarships.
Holt said he appreciates the donation from Bill Holt Chevrolet, which will allow all 12 team members to have a professional-looking uniform.
The check presentation was made Saturday morning at the dealership with most fishing club members present. However, a few could not attend, Holt said, because they were out fishing.
Fishing club members are Hunter Bouldin, Samuel Vandagriff, Matthew Butcher, Travis Lockhart, Adrien Thaxton, Daniel Hobbs, Kaleb Smith, Gage Simpson, Brock Watson, Lucas Young, Jeff McCormick and Keaton Turner.
