Firetruck brings Story Time to life

Pre-school children got to do more than read about firefighters during Story Time at Magness Library. They were treated to the real thing, including an up-close look at the city’s main ladder truck, Tower One.
“We wanted the children to become familiar with firetrucks and firefighters,” said Magness Library assistant director Michelle Chisam. “Children, especially during stressful situations, could see a fireman as something scary. We don’t want children to run from firefighters during fires. We want them to run to them.”
McMinnville Fire Department Capt. Josh Brock says the department volunteers to provide demonstrations to children to acclimate them to the appearance of a firefighter in full gear.
“For a child, seeing a firefighter in full gear can be scary,” said Brock. “Seeing one for the first time during a fire can be extremely terrifying. That’s why we volunteer to do these demonstrations. We want children to know there is nothing to fear from us. We want children to recognize us as help.”
Story Time participants gathered in the parking lot of First United Methodist Church to see Tower One. While Brock spoke to the children about what a firefighter does, firefighter Drew Simpson wore his gear. Then, the children were allowed a closer inspection of the firetruck.
This week’s Story Time at the library will be dedicated to Fire Prevention Week. Topics covered will include the importance of smoke detectors, establishing and practicing a family escape plan, what to do during a fire, etc. Each participant will be presented with a fire hat.
The library’s Story Time effort will be fun for the children, as well as provide them with lifesaving information, library officials say. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, every day at least one child dies from a home fire and every hour approximately 16 children are injured from fires or burns. In 2008, nearly 61,000 children around the world died due to a fire or burns.
“We appreciate McMinnville Fire Department for coming out and allowing the children a close look at the fire truck,” said Chisam. “My arms are aching from helping the children into and out of the firetruck, but they really enjoyed it.”
