Hot ashes are being blamed for a fire that consumed a family’s home Sunday morning off Sparta Street. The house, which belonged to the Tom Hillis family, was virtually destroyed by the 8 a.m. fire which was spotted by another member of their family.“He spotted the fire on the porch from outside and notified them the house was burning,” said sheriff’s deputy Jason Satterwhite of the relative who came up on the blaze at the residence located near VFW bridge. “Everyone got out of the house safely but few personal items could be saved before smoke and fire filled the house.”Satterwhite said his investigation revealed the culprit was likely hot ashes that had been placed on the front porch just prior to the fire breaking out.“The ashes had been cleaned from the wood stove that morning and the ash can set outside on the porch,” Satterwhite said.Members of the Rock Island-Campaign and Collins River Volunteer Fire departments battled the blaze well into Sunday morning.
