A father faces child neglect charges after his 2-year-old was found wandering in the road. The father, Michael C. Sparkman, 22, will have a hearing on the charge of child abuse and neglect later this month before General Sessions Judge Bill Locke. His charges come after police were dispatched to investigate a child in the roadway in the Red Road area.“I went to homes in the area knocking on doors trying to find the parents of the child,” said McMinnville police officer Bo Hutchins in his warrant against Sparkman. After going to several doors where he got no answer, including the house where the father and child lived, he was approached by Sparkman’s girlfriend who was also looking for the missing child. It was then Hutchins went back to the Red Road address and met with the father.“He had gone to sleep and the child got out of the house,” Hutchins said, noting the cavalier attitude of the father over the dangerous situation surprised him.“He stated accidents happen and he did not show any concern about his child,” Hutchins said. “He had just got him (the child) back from the state.”Sparkman’s arrest comes as a local mother is serving 10 days in jail after her 2-year-old left her residence while she was sleeping.
