Toys for Christmas are being accepted for children at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Donation boxes are located at several area businesses.
This is the second year for the collection.
“Last year went very well,” said event organizer Heather Hodges. “Thanks to generous donations, we received around $500. Then, we had a police car from Sparta drop off a back seat and trunk full of toys. It was wonderful.”
Donation boxes can be found at Medley’s Dinner in Morrison, Northside Video, Morrison Hardware, McMinnville Country Club, McMinnville Drug Center, Prater’s BBQ, Solar Rayz, and Ben Lomand.
Boxes will also available for monetary donations. For individuals wanting to donate money instead of a toy, please make the check or money order payable to St. Jude.
“I did get cash donations last year,” said Hodges. “Any amount is appreciated. Your leftover change is fine. However, if you want to put a sizable donation in the box, please made it a check or a money order and make it out to St. Jude. I think that’s safer than putting $20 in a box sitting on a counter.”
Christmas cards, both store bought and homemade, will also be appreciated.
“If you want to write a card wishing a child Merry Christmas, that would be wonderful,” said Hodges. “I wouldn’t send get well soon cards. I’m sure they have gotten plenty of well wishes. What they need at Christmas is a whimsical card that will make them smile.”
Hodges began this effort in 2012 to bring happiness to the children who are separated from their families during Christmas because they are undergoing treatment. She received permission from St. Jude to collect toys and cards for the children.
This year’s St. Jude wish list includes basketballs, soccer balls, footballs, Imaginext, new release movies, portable DVD players, digital cameras, Legos, Barbie dolls and accessories, baby dolls and accessories, doll houses, jewelry for teenage girls, make-up sets, sketch books, Disney items, SpongeBob, superhero toys, sports-related hats and shirts, model kits, gift cards, and assorted electronic devices.
Please note St. Jude does not accept any stuffed toys or used items.
