Tennessee residents who have accumulated unwanted hazardous materials around their homes should mark their calendar and plan to take advantage of Tennessee’s free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event to be held Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Three Star Mall located at 1410 Sparta Street in McMinnville.
The event is being sponsored by Warren County Government and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
Household hazardous waste is defined as corrosive, flammable, toxic or reactive materials used in or around your home or garage that are no longer wanted or have become unusable. These types of materials should be properly disposed of and not included with regular garbage.
The state will have a household hazardous waste mobile collection site set up in the mall parking lot the day of the event which will allow local homeowners to safely dispose of all those leftover household chemicals, lawn and garden products and automotive materials they didn’t know how to get rid of before.
And best of all the environmentally conscious disposal of these materials will cost consumers nothing. The service is provided by the state and is completely free of charge.
Some of the household items that will be accepted at the event include cleaning fluids and disinfectants, drain openers, oven cleaners, paint thinner, paint strippers and removers, adhesives, unused medications, mercury thermostats and thermometers, driveway sealants, roofing tar, wallpaper remover, photo processing chemicals, aerosols and compressed gas, fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent bulbs. Lawn and garden chemicals including pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, and wood preservatives will be taken.
Automotive products can include oil and fuel additives, grease and rust solvents, naval jelly, carburetor and fuel injector cleaners, starter fluids, body putty, antifreeze/coolants and gasoline.
All of these materials can pose a significant danger to children and pets so it’s important to remove them from the home whenever possible, and the hazardous waste event is the perfect chance to do this.
It should be noted the Fairground Convenience Center will be open the day of the event from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. so any materials not acceptable at the mall event can be dropped off there. Items that can be disposed of at the Fairground Convenience Center year-round include paint, batteries, oil, oil filters and electronics. In addition local organizers say the county is utilizing a unique method to encourage recycling. Local residents can actually pick up unused paint there for free if they see some they can use.
Items that will not be accepted at the household hazardous waste collection event include: medical or infectious waste, needles and sharps, alkaline batteries, explosives, paint, electronics, ammunition, fireworks, military ordinance, gun powder, radioactive waste, including smoke detectors and radium paint, and any empty containers.
