Crash causes blackout

Charges have been leveled against a man who knocked out power on the south side of town when he slammed into a utility pole early Saturday morning.The suspected drunk driver, Michael Wayne Pennington, 27, is charged with DUI and vehicular assault. He will face hearing Thursday before General Sessions Judge Bill Locke.His arrest came after his 1999 Honda Civic slammed into a utility pole near the intersection of Higgenbottom and Leesburg Road around 3 a.m. Saturday. Deputies say it appeared Pennington tried to brake before he slammed into the utility pole, sending power lines crashing to the ground.“There was about 150 feet of heavy black skid marks leading up to the point of impact,” deputy Jared Jacobs said in his report.
