County commissioners nominated and unanimously appointed the four members needed to fill out the seven-member Financial Management Committee at its regular meeting Monday night, but not before three potential members threw their hats into the ring, only to withdraw them before the final vote.Appointed were Education Committee chairman Terry Bell, Budget and Finance Committee chairman Herschel Wells, Highway and Bridge Committee chairman Gary Prater, and Building and Grounds Committee chairman Carl Bouldin. The other three members of the committee are set by statute – County Executive John Pelham, Director of Schools Dr. Jerry Hale and Road Superintendent Levi Glenn. The committee will direct all purchasing for the county’s highway department, school system and county government beginning July 1, 2012 as a result of the county’s adoption of the 81 Act, which the county commission passed unanimously at its June meeting.Pelham informed the 23 commissioners present that by law only county commissioners were allowed to nominate and vote on the appointments, and that each nomination required a second. Commissioners were also informed they could nominate and vote for themselves, second their own nomination from another commissioner, or nominate any member of the community.“Obviously we need four nominees,” Pelham told the group. “We would like certainly to know that everyone who is nominated tonight is willing to serve.
