Commission approves public official bonds

On Monday night, the Warren County Commission voted to approve public official bonds.The bonds approved were County Court Clerk Bernadette W. Morris, $50,000, Register of Deeds Terry Smith, $50,000, County Clerk Lesa Scott, $50,000, Sherriff Jackie Matheny, $100,000, County Executive Herschel Wells, $100,000, Highway Department Superin-tendent Levie Glenn, $100,000, and Trustee Darlene Bryant, $1,643,997.Certain public officials are required to be bonded to ensure they uphold their responsibilities to provide proper, ethical, and legal services to the citizens of the county.The amounts of most bonds are determined by the county population. The exception is trustee, which is calculated according to revenue.Political official bonds recently became a hot topic during the county’s lawsuit against Kenneth Rogers. Ultimately, with the $60,000 settlement, the bond paid out $50,000 in protection, leaving Rogers liable to pay only $10,000.
