A father has been charged with aggravated child abuse in what is one of the worst cases of child abuse longtime detectives say they have ever seen. The suspect, Dustin Herndon, 24, remains held under $100,000 bond charged with the felony count that could cost him up to 25 years in prison if he is convicted. His charges come as a result of serious injuries sustained by his 5-month-old daughter during an incident over the summer. According to McMinnville Police detective Todd Rowland, the baby suffered severe brain trauma as a result of his actions.“We were told the injury she suffered was the same as if she’d been involved in a high-speed, roll-over car accident,” Rowland said.As for the specific abuse, detectives are still investigating the cause of her injuries. Thus far, the only explanation they have gotten about the injury was Herndon threw the child against the ceiling of their home. The baby was a patient at Vanderbilt Univer-sity Medical Center for over a month and remains in specialized care.
