Several F.C. Boyd Christian School middle-schoolers got to experience American history at its finest while having fun to boot. Approximately 20 students and 10 chaperones recently took a trip to our nation’s capital.
After arriving in Washington, D.C., the group toured the Air and Space Museum, Iwo Jima Marine Memorial, the U.S. Air Force Memorial, the Pentagon Memorial, Korean Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, and World War II Memorial.
The students were able to observe the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.
“The World War II Veterans Memorial was very touching. They had veterans flown in from all over the United States. Some came from nursing homes. To see them and to know they served our country and risked their lives keeping us safe touched my heart,” said chaperone Cindy Vining. “Also, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, everyone had to be very quiet. The children were very respectful. I am so glad they got to experience this trip.”
The group from Boyd toured the grounds of Capitol Hill and watched a session of the Supreme Court. They also toured the Library of Congress and the National Archives.
“We got to see the Supreme Court in Action. I loved that but I love anything to do with history. And, the Library of Congress was beautiful,” said Vining.
Other landmarks visited by the group included the Holocaust Museum, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing gift store, the Lincoln Memorial, the White House visitor’s center, FDR Memorial, Jefferson Memorial and the Pentagon City Mall.
The Smithsonian complex which includes the Museum of American History, Natural History Museum, National Art Gallery and the Air and Space Museum was the final stop before the group loaded the bus and headed back home.
