Giving birth out of wedlock is commonplace in today’s society. It’s so common in fact, the Centers for Disease Control reports 41 percent of all U.S. births in 2009 were to unmarried mothers. But that wasn’t the case in the early 1940s when giving birth out of wedlock was a societal taboo. That’s one of the complex issues addressed by Warren County native Jan Ray Kendall in her book “Bridge Over Calm Water.”“It’s a story about struggle,” said Kendall, who grew up in Midway and graduated high school in McMinnville in 1975.
