Old Crow Medicine Show will headline a lineup of 12 bands performing at Cumberland Caverns this weekend as filming for season three of the Bluegrass Underground TV series takes place over three days.
Production crews will begin setting up today for performances that start Friday night at 6 p.m. Music begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
“It’s like Bonnaroo 300 feet underground,” said Bluegrass Underground producer Todd Jarrell. “Bluegrass Underground has become an event and it’s very cool how it has become an event. People come from all over the country to see it. Last year someone came from as far away as the Netherlands.”
Bluegrass Underground began as a radio show before being picked up by PBS as a TV production. Vince Gill and Ricky Scaggs were two of the big names featured during the first two TV seasons.
The TV show has struck a popular chord as it’s aired in nearly 150 U.S. markets in 41 states, according to Jarrell. He says 30 percent of those broadcasts were during prime time.
In an effort to take advantage of the influx of tourists visiting Warren County over the weekend, special events are being planned Friday and Saturday in downtown McMinnville. Bands are scheduled to perform Friday and Saturday nights at Collins River BBQ, and there will be an open mike jam session Saturday morning at Highland Rim Music & Art.
“With all the excitement from Bluegrass Underground, we’re trying to take downtown up and notch and create some buzz,” said Christy Ross, who operates the Main Street barbershop called Ross & Company. “There are a lot of people coming in to see these shows. We’d like to have something for them to do downtown.”
With Bluegrass Underground shows starting Saturday at 2 p.m., the decision was made to offer open mike jam sessions at Highland Rim Music starting at 9 a.m. Breakfast will be served at Highland Rim, Main Street Bakery and Cafe, and Collins River BBQ.
Ross says she will be open bright and early Saturday morning to offering her old-fashioned, hot-towel shaves.
For evening entertainment, Just Lookin’ Around and Runaway Home will perform beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Collins River BBQ. Stained Glass Portrait and Mid-Day Farm Report are the bands scheduled to perform beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday at Collins River BBQ.
