The hospital's decision to stop accepting dead bodies as of Monday at 8 a.m. has prompted a local businessman to donate $20,000 to establish a morgue in Warren County. The businessman, who stressed he wants to remain anonymous, dropped a $20,000 check by the newspaper office on the Fourth of July. He said he settled on the $20,000 amount based on calculations made by Standard editor James Clark in a column he wrote in Friday's edition. In the column, Clark argued for the need for a morgue to be constructed locally because some county officials seem to be leaning toward making a long-term commitment to place the facility in Manchester."I've never seen one of our stories generate such a response," said Standard publisher Patricia Zechman, who has been with the newspaper over 35 years.
