State law says children must be 5 years old by Aug. 31 if they want to enter kindergarten for the 2013-14 school year. In years past, the 5-year-old birth date to enter kindergarten was Sept. 30. Parents who believe their children are ready to begin school can, however, request their child to enter kindergarten early.
