Winfree lifts Eastside with 24 points

The Eastside Lady Bulldogs toppled the Centertown Lady Warriors on Thursday in a tight game until the last quarter.

Centertown held a consistent, slight lead in the first half, but Eastside took control in the second half to win 37-28.

Eastside sixth-grader Sarah-Kate Winfree was unstoppable with 24 points. She scored more than twice as many points as anyone else in the game.

Centertown took an early lead scoring five points out of the gate, but Eastside’s Macie Bush and Winfree quickly caught the Lady Bulldogs up with a couple layups. Going into the second quarter, Centertown was up by 1 point.

Lady Warrior Kendra Fann made it on the board with two shots under the goal, helping pull Centertown ahead. Lady Bulldog Zoi Radny made an impressive jump shot, but Centertown’s Shelby Miller immediately matched her shot to keep Eastside behind.

At halftime, Centertown was up 15-10. The tides turned in the third quarter for the Lady Warriors as Winfree went on a scoring streak for the Lady Bulldogs putting up 10 points. She and Radny had back-to-back layups to secure the lead.

Centertown only put up 2 points on foul shots this quarter which helped the Lady Bulldogs. Eastside’s defense started to become too tough for the Lady Warriors. Going into the last quarter, Eastside was up 22-17.

Bush came out with a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter, and Winfree impressively stole the ball. But a bad pass led to Centertown’s Kealy Simpson making another basket.

The last quarter was filled with free throw shots with the Lady Warriors making five, and Winfree scored six for the Lady Bulldogs. Her foul shots and points led to a Lady Bulldog victory.

Centertown’s Fann made one final shot at the buzzer from under the goal, but the lead was too big to catch up.

The Eastside 7-8 grade girls beat Centertown in a power struggle in the first half and a runaway in the second half. The Lady Bulldogs won 37-28.
