Sadie Simmons gets ready for the serve against Franklin North at WCMS on Monday evening. Simmons and the Lady Pioneers defeated Avery Trace in straight sets Thursday night at WCMS, 25-19 and 25-11.

After suffering a loss to Algood Middle School on Tuesday night in Algood, the WCMS volleyball team got back on track Thursday night at home as it improved to 6-2 overall on the season, winning in straight sets against Avery Trace, 25-19 and 25-11.
Samantha Jennings led the Lady Pioneers in the match with two kills and an assist.
Marli McBride and Sadie Simmons added a kill apiece, while Madison Hollis had two.
Simmons also got it done in the assist column with two, while Kailee Whitlock added three.
The first set was pretty much point for point, according to coach Kelly Clayborne.
Elia Atterson stepped to the service line with the game tied 13-13, and came up with some big serves to give the Lady Pioneers some cushion, 17-13. Hollis continued the strong serving and gave the Lady Pioneers a 21-14 lead, and finished the game with good defense and communication.
In game two, the Lady Pioneers were down early, 8-0. Juju Pyburn came up with the Lady Pioneers still down and served seven straight to give them the lead, 11-10. Simmons stepped to the service line with the game close 13-11. Avery Trace didn’t have an answer for Simmons’ serves, as she was able to place the ball around the court, according to Clayborne.
“I was very pleased with the way the girls played,” said Clayborne. “We saw ourselves down in the second game and instead of giving up the girls fought back to take the big win. We limited our errors in the match. When we play good teams like Avery Trace, it is a must to get our serves in the court and tonight we were able to dominate at the service line.”
The Lady Pioneer JV also won in straight sets, 25-6 and 25-16.
In game one, Avery Trace didn’t have an answer for Bella Cantrell’s serves. Cantrell gave the Lady Pioneers the 11-0 lead early in the match. The Lady Pioneers were then able to finish the first game strong with great communication and movement on the court from all players.
In game two, both teams started out matching point for point, but the Lady Pioneers were able to get a little cushion off Brianna Winkler’s serving. Winkler gave the Lady Pioneers a 22-15 lead late in the match, and Mea Starkey was able to serve out the game, giving the Lady Pioneers the match.
The Lady Pioneers will be back in action Tuesday night at WCMS when they play host to the Van Buren County Eaglettes.
Match time is set for 4:30 p.m.
