Coach Susan Barrett isn’t as focused on wins and losses for her Warren County Middle School tennis teams. Coach Barrett simply is trying to find ways to get all of her players games.
With over 20 players on each tennis team, coach Barrett has had to use practice as a way to see which players get to play on game day. After weeks of crafting her lineups, coach Barrett finally got to put her Pioneers and Lady Pioneers on display Friday at home.
Warren County welcomed Riverside Christian to town as the teams competed at McMinnville Civic Center. Facing a talented team from Fayetteville was tough as the Pioneers and Lady Pioneers each lost, but coach Barrett saw her teams having fun on the court.
“Riverside Christian was tough, but the kids had a blast making new friends,” said Barrett. “Against Lewisburg on the road, the kids did an amazing job.”
The Pioneers and Lady Pioneers each opened the season Friday, April 5 with wins against Lewisburg. The Warren County girls won 9-0, while the boys team won 7-2.
The Lady Pioneer sweep was led in singles play by Kayla Smith and Rachel Stewart, who each won their sets 6-0. Chelsea Stewart and Breanna Richardson both won 6-1 while Liv Newby and Bec Loftis each captured 6-4 set wins.
In doubles, Stewart and Newby teamed to win 6-2. Smith and Bec Loftis won 6-1, as did Lila Loftis and Katherine Oxley.
The Pioneers won 5-of-6 singles matches against Lewisburg and took two doubles matches as well. John Phillips won 6-0, followed by 6-2 wins from J.T. Boyd and Jack Wood. Tyler Pomales was victorious 6-4 while Will Smartt needed a tiebreaker to win his set 7-6.
Smartt teamed with Wood and Boyd paired with Phillips to help the Pioneers win two doubles sets.
The Pioneers didn’t fair quite as well against Riverside Christian. The visitors won 11-2 as Pomales and Phillips were the lone Pioneers to win sets. Pomales and Phillips each won 3-2 in best-of-five sets.
Wood, Boyd, Smartt, Shuhei Sugawara, Logan Kell, Hunter Brock and Zane Maxwell all competed in singles matches for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers couldn’t find a combination that worked to bring home a doubles win either. Warren County was swept 4-0 in doubles as Brayden Carter, Kurtis Spurlock, Robert Balderas, Zeb Loftis, Aaron Myers, Chris White, London Harmon and Cameron Jones all participated for the Pioneers.
The Lady Pioneers fared better against Riverside Christian, but were still on the wrong side of a 5-4 decision.
Newby and Bec Loftis were successful in singles. The teams of Richardson and Stewart, along with Oxley and Lila Loftis, won in doubles.
The WCMS tennis teams will be back in action Tuesday in Cookeville. Action is set to start at 4 p.m.
