The middle school basketball teams are still traveling on divergent paths. The Lady Pioneers are continuing to soar, picking up their 11th win in a row Thursday, while the boys team is still searching for a formula to win consistently.
The WCMS girls continued their march to a Central Tennessee Conference championship last week, beating Tullahoma East on their home floor 39-16. In the night cap, the Pioneers fell to 5-7 with a 49-40 loss to the Wildcats.
The Lady Pioneers, now 11-1, continued their domination of CTC opponents with an easy with over the Lady Cats. Maci McBride was a big part in making it a breeze for the Lady Pioneers, scoring a season-high 20 points as Warren County led wire-to-wire.
A long-range splash by McBride, which followed Addison Steakley powering through for a three-point play midway through the quarter, helped Warren County go up 16-6 after the first quarter.
Tullahoma kept hanging around through halftime, but McBride’s scoring – and an all-out blitzing defense from Warren County – ended things quick in the third quarter. McBride scored seven points in the third, including another 3-pointer, while Tullahoma only had a single bucket over six minutes.
Abigail Netherton added the finishing touches, scoring all six of her points in the fourth to complete another blowout. The Warren County girls have now won six straight CTC games since starting the season with a tough loss at Franklin North Oct. 24., one the team avenged recently with a 49-33 victory at home.
In the boys game, Tullahoma East just had too much size and shooting for the Pioneers. Big man Noah Jones battered the Pioneers in the paint on his way to a 15-point night, while Gage Allen and Alex Miller combined for three 3-pointers for the visiting 'Cats.
Tullahoma built a 41-24 lead by the start of the fourth quarter, but the Pioneers wouldn’t quit. Luke Simpson scored eight of his game-high 16 points in the fourth – boosted by a pair of triples – and Maddux Baker had six late points on his way to a 13-point night, but the comeback fell short in the late stages.
The WCMS teams will be back in action this Monday against Tullahoma West. Action starts at 6 p.m.
